About OPC

A bald man with a beard stands. He is wearing glasses and looks amused; his hands are moving as if talking. He is wearing a long-sleved white t-shirt with fine blacak stripes across it. When you apply for a job at OPC, you’re a person not a number. We’re small so hiring for the right fit is incredibly important to us.

Find a job that’s right for you

We advertise our jobs on our website vacancies page, Seek, and NZ Government Jobs. We aim to share everything you need to know but you can always ask questions by emailing us at vacancies@privacy.org.nz

Apply for a job

We prefer that you apply for our jobs through Seek. We often get a lot of applicants and this helps keep track of them easily. Please send a CV and a cover letter. We often review our applications ahead of the cut-off date so it’s never too early to send yours in.

Research suggests that women and minority candidates may be less likely to apply for jobs, particularly if they don't perceive themselves as meeting all requirements. If you have most of the skills and you’re a great person, please apply.

Everyone has questions about a potential new job and we’d love to answer those for you before you apply. Email us at vacancies@privacy.org.nz

Top Tip

We think the cover letter is really important if you want to stand out. This is where you explain your interest in the job, based on what we have asked for in the job ad. Read the person specification and write your letter based on this. Generic letters and letters that look to be written with a lot of AI assistance are quick to spot and don't do you any favours.

Interviewing for a job

If you're shortlisted for an interview, we may do a phone screen with you first. This is an opportunity for you to assess if we're a right fit for you as much as it's a chance for us to get to know you better. We always respond to all applications and our aim is to be in touch within two weeks of the advert closing about your application. Interviews are usually in-person but sometimes might have one or more people on Zoom, depending on the role. If you’d like to know the set up just ask.

Manager roles will have at least one interviewer from our Senior Leadership Team and it is common for us to have an interview panel of two or three people.

We usually follow the behavioural-based interview format e.g. tell us about a time that you did X and what happened. Some roles also have a pre-interview or post-interview short written task but we’ll be very clear about what that is at the time we offer you an interview. These tasks are designed to test your skills and give us a sense of your written communication style and approach, not catch you out.

Whānau support

Interviews can be nerve-wracking and we want you to feel comfortable. You’re welcome to bring whānau or other support if that will make you feel comfortable. Just let us know when we offer you an interview.

Reference checks

If you progress past the interview stage, then we’ll do reference checks (usually two) but we can contact you then to ask for details. We will never contact your referees without telling you first. All reference checks are confidential.

Making an offer

If you’re the successful applicant we’ll call to make a verbal offer and then follow that up in writing. Your offer will be dependent on us doing some pre-employment checks too. These are:

  • criminal record check
  • qualifications check
  • serious misconduct check (only for Public Sector candidates)

All pre-employment checks are confidential.

Welcome aboard!

Once your offer paperwork is signed, and your starting date agreed, we’ll let the team know. We mihi every person who starts work at OPC on the first day. We’ll also share a short profile of you (that you’ll approve first) so we can find common interests and chat about them.
